The divisions are lined up in groups of 4 for the schedule. Each team plays their division rivals twice in a season -- once at home and once away. You'd lose schedule flexibility or would have to change the whole thing if you went to two large divisions. I think rotating teams in divisions would be interesting... move the strongest team from last year to a different division this year, etc. Or something. That’s a good point. It does a nice job of solving many of the problems. My other thought with all of this is why does the NFL have 4 four team divisions?
